Clive Percival Skinner
Clive was born on 12th September,
1916 to Ruby Amelia and Percival George Skinner at Prahran/Windsor. He commenced school at
Windsor State School in 1922. In 1926 the family moved to 36 Radnor Street, Camberwell and
Clive continued his education at South Camberwell State School. In 1929 he attended
Gardner Central School and finally in 1931 he went to Swinburne Technical College. At the
age of 16 years in 1933 (in the middle of the Depression years) Clive began a four year
apprenticeship with Mason Firth & McCutcheon as a Hand & Machine Compositor and
became a fully fledged Linotype Operator. During his teenage years and early 20s Clive was a very good sportsperson playing football with South Camberwell in the Amateur Association, Cricket with South Camberwell in the Eastern Suburbs competition - he was a right-arm bowler and a left-handed batsman. He also played tennis, generally on a Sunday, much to his mothers annoyance. About the age of 16 Clive became infatuated with Phyllis Elsie Ford from Park Road, Glen Iris and in 1940 they were married at South Camberwell Methodist Church. Their first home was at Straughan Street, Burwood and in February, 1941 their first son Alan was born. Clive joined the Army in 1942 and because of his trade as a printer he was posted to the Cartographic Company stationed at Fortuna House in Bendigo. He was engaged in the printing of maps of New Guinea and the South Pacific region for both the Australian and American Armed Forces. He held the rank of Corporal and on a number of occasions applied for overseas service but this was denied him because of his expertise in the printing of maps. Clive was able to get "home leave" about every three months and occasionally Phyllis went up to Bendigo for a weekend. In 1943 Margaret, the eldest daughter, was born. Clive was discharged from the Army late in 1945 and he returned to Mason Firth & McCutheon within a matter of weeks. Whilst still living at Burwood, Pamela June was born in 1947. Shortly after this the family moved to Chelsea and Robert Clive was born in 1949. The family moved to Donna Buang Street, Camberwell in 1950 and it was in this area that the children completed their education, grew up into young adults and began their working lives. Finally in the middle 60s the family moved to Yuille Street, Ashburton. Clive worked in the printing industry for 50 years as a Linotype Operator, Compositor, Proof-Reader and later a Production Foreman commencing with Mason Firth & McCutcheon and finishing his career with E.L. Bell, a subsidiary of Bryant & May. Unfortunately in 1976 Phyllis died and this was a heart-breaking time for Clive after 36 years of a wonderful marriage. Later Clive met and married Joyce Gilham and with her visited many country areas during which they would always call at the local RSL Club for a meal and of course to play the pokies. Clive was a respected member of the Chelsea RSL Club. Clive was very interested in horse racing and always took numbers 1 and 4 as a quinella on most race meetings. He considered this just as good as studying the form and he was really excited when 1 and 4 got home. During the last few years of his life, Joyce had to be placed in the Carrum Nursing Home and Clive spent each day visiting Joyce and would then go to the Chelsea RSL for a meal and enjoy the companionship of his friends. Clive died on the 28th January, 1998 and was cremated at Springvale Crematorium.
