The Lamb's
from Durham - Yorkshire (UK)

William Lamb, a pitman/miner lived in Ouston (near Chester-Le-Street in Durham, Yorkshire), married Hannah Moffitt and their known children were Hanna born 1825, Ann born 1827, Joseph born 1829 and Thomas born 1831.

Thomas was married at St. Mary's Church of England, Gateshead, on 17th June, 1851 to Mary Gladston(e), who was the daughter of John Gladston(e) and (mother unknown). Mary was born in 1832 at Beamish. Whilst living in Durham, Thomas and Mary had 3 children - John (1) born and died in 1852, Elizabeth born in 1853 and John (2) born in 1855.

Thomas Lamb left Liverpool (UK) on 8th January, 1858 aboard the "Oliver Lane" and arrived in Melbourne in April, 1858. As he was a miner it is assumed that he went to the goldfields in the Bendigo area.

Mary Lamb departed Liverpool (UL) on 24th August, 1858 with her then 2 children, Elizabeth aged 5 years and John (2) aged 3 years aboard the "John and Lucy" and arrived in Melbourne in December 1858. Mary was listed as being a dressmaker. Presumably Thomas met his family in Melbourne and they went to live at Vaughan, near Castlemaine, where Thomas was now a miner. Their son Joseph was born here in October, 1859.

The family then moved to Bendigo and in 1863 were living in Harrison Street, Iron Bark Gully (now a suburb of Bendigo). There were 3 more daughters born at Bendigo - Mary born 1863, Hannah born 1868 and Isabella Jane born in 1872.

Thomas must have been fairly successful as he owned 4 or 5 properties in Harrison Street on which he paid Ten Pounds in rates per annum. Thomas died in 1876 and Mary paid the rates until 1880/81, (information from Bendigo Council Rate Notices held at Bendigo Library), when it is presumed that Mary sold the properties and moved to Eaglehawk. Mary died in 1919 at her grand-daughter's, (Ethel Meeson Cooper) home in Victoria Street, Eaglehawk.

Thomas was buried at Bendigo (Sandhurst) Cemetery in 1876 and according to records at Bendigo Library there is no headstone on the grave. Mary was also buried at the same cemetery but there is no mention of her being in the same grave (this needs to checked out and also the position of the graves).

Thomas and Mary Lamb's family was as follows:
1. John (1) born and died 1852 Durham (UK).
